Q: What do the Cub Scouts do?
A:  Pack 1218 offers a year-round Cub Scout Pack…no shutting down during the summer!  Many dens organize activities that occur in addition to the pack activities, so it is best to check with your son’s den leader about den specific events.  Below is a brief overview of the pack’s annual events.

Summertime Pack Overnighter:  This is an overnight campout at Firestone Scout Reservation, just off the 57 at Tonner Canyon.  The overnight is followed by a day of Scout activities that provide boys with an opportunity to work on achievements and electives from their Scout Handbooks.  The main objective is fun for the whole family.

Along with back-to-school, fall brings several pack events:

September:  The Pack participates in Patriot Day by holding a special flag ceremony at Raymond Elementary School.

Veterans Day:  We join other Scouting organizations and the American Legion to honor our veterans at the Fullerton Veterans Day Parade.  Our Cub Scouts distribute water to the groups marching in the parade and assist with cleanup.

Scouting for Food:  This is one of the pack’s service projects every year.  The Scouts distribute bags to surrounding neighborhoods with a note asking families to donate food for the needy.  Our Scouts return a week later to collect the bags and turn in the food to the Second Harvest Food Bank.  We are very proud to participate in this annual BSA service project, and it teaches the boys a great deal about service to others and helping Orange County residents who have come across hard times.

Trail’s End Popcorn:  Our main fundraiser.  You may already be customers of one of our Cub Scouts!  BSA popcorn comes in many flavors and people usually have a hard time picking just one favorite.  Your Scout is not required to participate but if every Scout sells just one item, it helps the pack reach its financial goal for the year.  Some Scouts jump in and go above & beyond…in the past, our top seller has sold as much as $2500 in popcorn!  The district’s leader has sold as much as $15,000 and the top pack in Scouting has done $63,000.

Winter Events:

The always fun Pinewood Derby.  This is a famous National Scouting event held every Winter & Spring.  Our pack holds the Pinewood Derby in January. The Cubs are encouraged to do as much work on their car as possible.  Moms, Dads, sisters & brothers are invited to create a masterpiece to race in the adult & siblings division.

Blue & Gold Banquet:  This annual Cub Scout event is held in February to honor Cub Scouting’s birthday in the USA.  The pack supplies a catered dinner and all family members are invited to join the celebration!  Many Scouts manage to earn their rank badge by this event, and it is our last event with the second year Webelos as they bridge into a Boy Scouts Troop during this month.

Friends of Scouting (FOS):  An annual direct soliciting program asking corporations and individuals for financial donations that will be directly utilized in the Orange County Council Scout Program.  Pack 1218 has a specific goal to meet for monetary donations, and when one considers what each family gets from Scouting, the fundraising goal we strive to meet is not much!  The funds raised through the Friends of Scouting Program directly benefit the Scouting council our pack belongs to.  There is no required donation amount. Each family is asked to donate what they are able & comfortable with.  Our theory: If we all pitch in a little, it helps us to reach our goal.

With springtime comes Scout-O-Rama:   A day-long carnival of Scouting activities & adventures.  This is another, smaller fundraiser through the sale of coupon books.  Each book is full of coupons for local businesses and the cover is a ticket to Scout-O-Rama.  As with popcorn sales, your son doesn’t have to participate.  But, again, if everyone sells just one, we can maintain a successful pack program that offers the promise of Scouting to our sons!

Memorial Day:  Pack 1218 joins with local packs, troops, Girls Scout units and the American Legion to decorate a local cemetery with American flags, crosses and Stars of David.
