Pack Operation

Pack Operation

Q:  How does a pack operate?
Q: What is a chartered organization?
Q: What are the Pack’s responsibilities to the member families?

Q:  How does a pack operate?
A:  The Pack operates through cooperation between the parents, den leaders, Cubmaster and the pack committee.  When everyone takes a small role in the operation of our pack, it is ensured that pack will run smoothly & successfully.  An efficient pack allows for a fun & safe year-round program that provides numerous opportunities for the boys to learn & grow.

Parents are welcome to take on as much responsibility as they like!  The minimum requirement is the time an adult spends assisting their Cub Scout with home-based Scout activities.  This could be going over a home emergency plan with your Tiger Cub or Wolf, or assisting your Bear or Webelos in completing an Achievement.

Do you have the urge to get more involved?  The pack provides numerous Scouting functions throughout the year.  Some of the functions require months of planning and involvement in committee, while others require only a couple weeks commitment without the formation of an event committee.

Many hands make light work!  It’s no secret:  when only a few parents help with ALL the jobs, the pack will not function well and your son’s experience will not be the best it could be.  THOSE parents will be spending A LOT of time on Scouting.  If many parents join in, taking on one or two small tasks, the pack committee members and den leaders will be able to concentrate on their assigned tasks and keep the pack program going.  In this case, many parents will spend a little time on Scouting.

Why should the Scouts have all the fun?  Suit up and jump in!  You’ll look sharp in a Scout uniform yourself!  Each new Tiger Cub Den needs a parent to step up and be the den leader.  Honestly, a long-standing joke with Scout Leaders is one that many were told when they joined, “An hour a week is all it takes.”  To have a great den meeting, it does take a bit more planning and preparation.  But we’re here to help and there are many resources available to help new & existing den leaders.

Is your son joining an existing den?  His den leader will always welcome a helping hand!  Your assistance at a den meeting or two will be greatly appreciated!  Have a great idea for a den outing?  Feel free to take the lead on this outing and help make it happen for the boys.  Taking on one small task like this helps your son’s den leader enormously.

Q: What is a chartered organization?
A: The chartered organization is the group that sponsors the Scout unit. Chartered organizations can be faith-based, civic or educational organizations.  The chartered organization typically provides meeting space for the unit, leadership and or financial assistance.  The chartered organization has a representative to coordinate activities of the Scouting unit and the organization.

Our chartered organization is the Fullerton American Legion Post.  The American Legion is a service organization made up of military veterans. They meet at a local restaurant so Pack 1218 meets at Raymond Elementary School.  Many veterans were Scouts and many American Legion members have been involved in Scouting in one way or another.  Their interest in Scouting is a natural result of their own past history & involvement as children & teens.  The American Legion shares with Scouting an interest in upholding the traditions & values of the United States.

Q: What are the Pack’s responsibilities to the member families?
A: Foremost, we will provide a diversity of opportunities for your family to enjoy a safe & fun Cub Scout Program!  In addition to this commitment, Pack 1218 strives to educate the youth in history, participating in citizenship, character development and responsibility skills.  We believe Scouting builds stronger, smarter, responsible and successful adults.  The Pack’s Cubmaster and committee members are always available to answer your Scout-related questions and address any concerns you have about Cub Scouting.  The leaders of Pack 1218 are committed to help your family enjoy Scouting and have a successful Cub Scout experience.
