Pack Traditions
Pack Traditions
Q: Does the pack have any traditions?
A: Not only does the pack have a tradition of learning while having fun, Pack 1218 has a history of being award winners! The Pack is a Founder’s Unit, a Quality Unit and a winner of the Summertime Pack Award for being active during the summer. Our Dens have won the National Den Award for their activities. As you can see, we dedicate our time & efforts to ensuring the youth have endless opportunities to learn, grow and have fun in Scouting
Do you want to talk about tradition? How about the Pinewood Derby! The Cub Scouts of Pack 1218 take great delight in building & racing their Pinewood Derby cars. The Pinewood Derby has come a long way since it’s beginning in 1953 right up the freeway in Manhattan Beach. Pack 1218 raced on one of the oldest wooden tracks in Orange County until our 2011 race. This year the pack leaped into the 21st century borrowing an aluminum track with computerized results & digital timing. We jumped decades in a short amount of time. You will hear more about the Pinewood Derby as we approach January. But kits are available all year round so feel free to pick up a kit early and start designing.
Hopefully we started a new tradition this year with the advent of the “Geezer Grudge Match.” Some of the older leaders brought out their Pinewood Derby cars from WAY back when. These cars were so old they had skinny little tires. But they still run! Do you have your old car at home? Bring it in January! And we have always had an adult & sibling division for family members.
